Clinic for Dissociative Studies

The Clinic for Dissociative Studies was established by Valerie Sinason in 1998 as a small specialist outpatient mental health service for people suffering from the range of dissociative disorders.  It was established following the completion of a Department of Health-funded research project on sadistic ritual abuse.  This project had been undertaken by Dr Rob Hale, consultant psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, and Valerie Sinason, consultant child psychotherapist and adult psychoanalyst, at the Portman Clinic in London.  The research project had found that a significant minority of subjects in the research sample were dissociative.  With the aid of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, the Clinic for Dissociative Studies was established as an independent provider to the NHS.

The Clinic for Dissociative Studies offers individual, couples and family psychotherapy, which can be on a non-intensive or intensive basis.  Intensive psychotherapy is from twice-weekly; where necessary to aid traveling or other problems, this can be offered on the same day through a double session.

The Clinic offers multi-disciplinary assessments, which are carried out by a consultant psychologist, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst/psychotherapist.  Treatment offered is psychoanalytically-based, is tailored to suit the individual client and can include a mixture of therapies.

The Centre offers a wide range of services to professionals, to clients who may have a dissociative disorder and to the public at large.

Our experienced team is dedicated to provide the best possible service for this area of complex trauma. We have recently introduced a branch office in Middlesbrough in the North East.

The Pottergate Centre for Dissociation & Trauma offers a wide range of services tailored to the specific needs of individual Professional Services across the country. These include Assessments, Treatment Plans, Consultancy, Training, Court Reports and Research. In addition, we offer supervision, consultancy and support for therapists working with this client group.

Services Offered

Assessment: A full Psychiatric and Dissociative Assessment is undertaken using DES (Dissociative Experience Scale), SDQ20 (Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire) and SCID D (Structured Clinical Interview for DSM IV Dissociative Disorders). A detailed report is sent that will include a recommended treatment plan.

Treatment Plans: A variety of treatment plans can be offered. This can include any of the following depending on requirements: weekly 2 hour individual therapy ; up to three times a week 50 minute individual sessions; weekly group analytical psychotherapy; local psychiatric cover; short term residential stay.

Consultancy: This is a unique feature that the Centre is able to offer in partnership with the funding body. We are able to meet with the psychiatric team on location and help put together a Care Plan tailored to their requirements and that of the patient in question. This can include training of a local designated psychotherapist; supervision of the individual therapy; initial facilitating of the multi-disciplinary team (Consultant Psychiatrist, GP, CPN, etc).  A key element to a good outcome, with this patient group, is a contained holding environment where the patient’s potential for splitting is reduced to a minimum.

Training: Workshops are regularly offered in Norwich and can be organized nationally for both therapists and multi-disciplinary teams.

Reports: The Centre is experienced in undertaking Court Reports as well as assessments for Social Services. We are also able to provide 'Capacity Assessments' for Professional Organisations requiring an independent assessment under the recent Mental Capacity Act 2005.
